Montana Wilderness Association exists because of strong volunteer activism. Our members engage in a range of activities, from participating on the State Council to leading Wilderness Walks. We will help you focus your energy on an activity that best fits your talents and desires to contribute.

Volunteers who are interested in spreading a pro-wilderness message in their community can now participate in a program developed by the MWA State Council. The Council has produced a professional quality PowerPoint presentation, with script, about the positive values of wilderness. The show is suitable for a wide variety of audiences including service clubs, chambers of commerce, sportsmen’s groups, schools, churches etc. Training is available to coach volunteers through the presentation process, although the show is designed to be easy to use. Support materials include FAQs. Contact Doug Ferrell or call 827-4341.

Chapter Boards: Each of Montana Wilderness Association’s five chapters is governed by a volunteer board. The Chapter Boards work locally and regionally to increase participation in wilderness related activities, identify and protect local landscapes, and provide support for statewide campaigns. For information about a board in your area, send an email to the Board chair: Eastern Wildlands (Billings); Flathead-Kootenai (Whitefish); Island Range (Great Falls); Madison-Gallatin (Bozeman); Wild Divide (Helena).

State Council: Montana Wilderness Association is governed by a Council of elected volunteers from around the state and representatives from each Chapter. The Council members set policy and strategy, and work to ensure the organization is financially sound. For more information about the State Council, please email us.

Wilderness Walks: Roughly 2000 people annually participate in our Wilderness Walks. On these walks, people experience Montana’s beautiful landscapes, make new friends, and become lifelong wilderness advocates.

  • Volunteer to lead a Wilderness Walk hike in the summer or a snowshoe in the winter.
  • For information on the walks themselves, visit Wilderness Walks.

Annual Convention: The Annual Convention is a time for learning, socializing and stimulating your wilderness energies. Old and new friends come together and solve the problems of the world--the luncheon soapbox is a powerful thing! There are many opportunities to lend a hand, and earn a reduction in your convention fees, by working at the registration table or Marketplace, being a greeter, or assisting in the auctions. Please contact us if you can help at our annual convention. For information on the Convention itself, visit Annual Convention.

Other Volunteer Opportunities: There are often short, specific jobs that can use volunteer expertise. If you have time to devote to wilderness, please contact us and we will make the most of your talents.
