Imagine taking a snowshoe walk through the Ross Creek Cedars in Northwest Montana or taking a trek up to Boot Lake in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest with some new friends. Winter is a great time to see our beautiful state in a new light.
The Montana Wilderness Association’s Winter Wilderness Walks program has been getting folks out to play in the snow since 2004. This is a great way to meet new people, explore your surroundings and see wildlife in a different setting.
Like our Summer Wilderness Walks program, volunteer leaders will take you on walks that are perfect for beginners to more challenging hikes to the top of mountain peaks. With so many choices this year, everyone can find a walk that suits their skill level. Except where noted, snowshoes will be provided by the Walk leaders.
Our Winter Wilderness Walks booklet is available online and has been designed so you can print a page with the description of which hike you’d like to attend. This way, you don’t have to print the entire booklet for only one hike. Just look at the index, find the hike you like, select what pages to print from your “Print” screen and go for it. The “book” also includes a section on winter safety, which is a useful refresher for anyone heading out into winter conditions (see page 4).
If you would like to become a member of the Montana Wilderness Association, and automatically receive our Wilderness Walks booklets, a quarterly newsletter, and other special mailings, you can sign up online or contact Montana Wilderness Association's state office in Helena at 406-443-7350.
We look forward to seeing you on a snowshoe hike!
